Bus Portrait is a long take of a bus window at night. While it’s dark outside the bus, a woman’s reflection on the window appears solid. When the bus passes city lights, the lights cut through and overwhelm her image.
Sur face (bubbles, fog, glass, mirrors, paper, water) is a series of video experiments that Margot Quan Knight did in 2009 while thinking about two things: the relationship
between an image and the object in the world that it is “of” (in this case her face), and the relationship
between an image and the surface on which it appears. That surface, so necessary for the image’s
existence, seems both fragile and impenetrable, a barrier and an opportunity.
This project was developed during a residency at 911 Seattle Media Arts Center.
